Explore the mountains, nature and culture around Sucre
Sucre is surrounded by beautiful mountains, valleys, waterfalls and traditional communities. Here are some of our favorite places for hiking and day trips.
1. CHATAQUILA β INCA TRAIL
Recommended for: Beginners and intermediate hikers
The Chataquila Inca Trail is one of the most popular hikes near Sucre. The trail follows an ancient pre-Hispanic path and offers beautiful views of the surrounding valleys.
Starting point: Chataquila
How to get there: Take a local bus/minibus towards Chataquila or Potolo.
Approximate departure: Around 8:30β9:00 AM
Transportation: Approximately Bs 15 each way
Hiking time: Approximately 2β2.5 hours
Duration: Half-day or full-day trip
Accommodation: Not necessary; most visitors return to Sucre the same day.
Silvia's Tip: Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat.
2. CHATAQUILA β CHAUNACA β MARAGUA
Recommended for: Experienced hikers and adventure lovers
This is a longer and more adventurous route that combines the ancient Inca Trail, mountain landscapes and traditional communities.
How to get there: Take transportation towards Chataquila/Potolo.
Approximate departure: Around 8:30β9:00 AM
Transportation: Approximately Bs 15 each way
Duration: 2 days
Accommodation: Available in the Maragua area.
Important: Some sections of the trail can be difficult to follow. We recommend going with a local guide, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area.
3. MARAGUA CRATER
Recommended for: Nature lovers, hikers and photographers
Maragua is one of the most spectacular natural destinations near Sucre. The area is known for its colorful geological formations, mountain landscapes, traditional Jalq'a communities and the Devil's Throat.
You can combine hiking with a cultural experience and learn more about traditional Bolivian textiles and local communities.
How to get there: Transportation towards Chataquila/Potolo, followed by hiking depending on the route.
Bus: Approximately Bs 15 each way according to recent traveler information.
Recommended duration: 2 days / 1 night

4. SIETE CASCADAS β LLINPHI
Recommended for: Nature lovers and adventure seekers
Siete Cascadas is a beautiful natural area with waterfalls, rivers and hiking trails. It is located in the Llinphi community, outside Sucre.
The area also offers adventure activities such as ziplining and rappelling.
Location: Llinphi
How to get there: Local transportation or organized transportation from Sucre.
Recommended: Start early in the morning.
Hiking: Approximately 3 km to the waterfalls, depending on the route.
Duration: Day trip
Accommodation: We recommend returning to Sucre unless you have arranged accommodation in advance.

5. POTOLO
Recommended for: Culture lovers, hikers and travelers looking for an authentic Bolivian experience
Potolo is a traditional community in the mountains near Sucre and is especially known for its Jalq'a textiles, traditional culture, local food and beautiful landscapes.
Location: Potolo, Chuquisaca
How to get there: Local transportation from Sucre towards Potolo/Chataquila.
Transportation: Rural schedules can vary. Confirm the departure time before traveling.
Recommended: Saturday is an interesting day to visit because local cultural and artisan activities may take place.
Accommodation: Simple accommodation may be available locally, but arrangements should be made in advance.
